CHAPTER 11

Quebec West: the demographics

Figure 2 -- The ridings of Quebec West

Figure 3 -- The boundaries of Quebec West

Figure 4 -- The Montreal Area Ridings of Quebec West

Notes:

The Quebec West ridings listed under the “Ranking” column in Figure 2 -- The ridings of Quebec West are ranked according to percentage of non-Francophone per riding, in descending order. The raw data was kindly supplied by the office of Le Directeur général des elections du Québec on July 3, 2008. I subsequently formatted the data with various spreadsheet functions such as percentage of non-Francophone per riding, etc. I list all 125 Quebec ridings in Appendix B -- Language Demographics for all 125 Quebec Ridings.

The reader will note that Ungava, ranked 11 in terms of non-Francophone percentage and Pontiac, ranked 21, are not included in Quebec West, despite the fact that their non-Francophone percentages are higher than other ridings that are included. This is because these ridings do not provide a contiguous connection to the other ridings of Quebec West. Ridings that have relatively low non-Francophone percentages are included for either of two reasons: (1) to maintain the integrity of the Montreal area; or (2) because they provide a contiguous connection to the Ontario border.

The population of Quebec West is approximately 34% of the total population of Quebec.

As stated previously, the number of non-Francophones in Quebec West is approximately 75% of all of Quebec’s non-Francophone.

The number of Francophones in Quebec West is approximately 24% of the total number of Francophones in all of Quebec.
